The Role of Silicon in Plant Nutrition

If you are an agriculturist, a farmer or a gardener the need to have good fertilizers for your crops and plants is mandatory for their growth. Hence, you always seek to find new and effective nutrients for your plants. Silicon mineral is one such nutrient helping plants to grow fast and healthy.

Before you proceed further, need to know more about silicon as a mineral:

It is a known fact that Silicon, commonly termed as Si, is the second most largely found chemical element in the earth crust next to oxygen. Hence, the basic fact is that plants are natural elements growing from the earth crusts and they need it.

Silicon is generally termed as non essential element that has capability to help some particular species of plants to grow as the plants can take its form of mono- silicic acid. The dicot plants like legumes and leafy green vegetables having broad leaf don’t favor much to take silicon in for growth, hence only tinniest percentage of silicon you can see in their tissue where as monocot plants like grass and onions take silicon more than dicot plants. Hence, it isn’t quite essential part of nutrients meant for plants, but its presence will surely help plants grow flourishingly.

Benefits of having silicon as a nutrient for plants:

  • Strengthens cell wall of plants – This way, silicon is able to provide resisting power to the plant, thus they don’t get easily affected by the plant diseases. They can even resist pests’ issue that usually creates havoc in their growth. Thus, farmers will be able to have full grown up plants with less efforts of spraying pesticides. You will be eating organic plant food as there won’t be any chemical used to drive away pests and keep away diseases.
  • Plants like pumpkin, gourd and cucumber often fall prey to powdery mildew, stubborn enough not to respond to mild pesticides. Hence, the plants start to wilt. If the plant stem and upper surface is stringer, this mildew can’t stick on. That only can happen if silicon is added in the plant nutrient food.
  • Makes the plant roots store water and thus during drought the plant grows without any issues because of scarcity of water.

Silica nutrient is usually available in the form of potassium silicate and calcium silicate in fertilizers industries. However, renowned agriculturists warn not to add too much of silica nutrient as it may not be beneficial for your plant growth.
